Start with the official program

Texas Education Freedom Accounts, often called TEFA, is a state program overseen by the Texas Comptroller. It helps accepted families pay for approved education expenses. The official program website explains who can apply, how applications are reviewed, and how approved funds may be used.

School choice involves several decisions: understanding a funding program, finding a school, completing school admissions, and planning for educational costs. Use the state’s information alongside a direct conversation with the school you are considering.

Application updates

New applications for the 2026–27 school year are closed. Families interested in the next cycle can join the official interest list for 2027–28 updates. Existing applicants should follow the program’s instructions and account notices for their own application or waitlist status.

Joining an interest list is a way to receive updates; it does not replace a program application. Check the official website for the next application window, current eligibility rules, and any materials the program requests.

Explore schools and education providers

The official TEFA finder is a useful starting point for researching participating schools and providers. After finding an option, contact the school to discuss admissions, grade levels, tuition, additional costs, and space for the school year you are considering.

A school’s presence in the TEFA directory does not establish a partnership with TXCSF. TEFA participation, school admission, and a foundation scholarship are separate matters to confirm with the appropriate organization.

Already have an application or account?

Use the Parent Portal link on the official family information page to access your account. For application notices, an existing waitlist position, or program questions, follow the state program’s instructions and its official support resources.

The official support center also explains the difference between selecting a school in the program and completing enrollment. Selecting a school through the program does not enroll your child; admissions and enrollment are completed directly with the school.

Questions to consider as you plan

Your family’s next step

What does the official program say about eligibility, the application window, and the status of an existing application? Keep contact information current and follow the program’s account instructions.

Your school options

Does the school serve your child’s grade level? What are its admissions steps, enrollment dates, tuition, and other charges? Ask the school which costs and processes apply to your family.

Your education budget

Which expenses does TEFA approve, and how must families document or pay for them? Review the official rules and ask about costs that would remain your responsibility.

TEFA and TXCSF: two separate paths

TXCSF is developing its own scholarship process with local school coordination. A foundation inquiry or scholarship application does not submit a TEFA application, create a state program account, or enroll a student in a school.

For state program rules, account access, application status, or approved expenses, use official TEFA resources. For the foundation’s scholarship plans and school coordination, contact TXCSF. If you are exploring more than one source of support, ask each program how its rules apply before making a funding plan.

Common TEFA questions

Where do I find current eligibility and funding information?

Use the official family information page. Program criteria, award information, approved expenses, and application instructions should come from the state program rather than a third-party summary.

Does TXCSF decide TEFA applications?

This website provides links to the state program. TXCSF’s planned scholarships have their own process. Follow official TEFA instructions for a state program application or an existing account.

What if my family already applied for 2026–27?

Follow the official program’s account notices and guidance for existing applicants. The closure of new applications does not describe the outcome of an individual application or waitlist position.

How do I get ready for the next application cycle?

Join the official interest list, explore participating schools, and review new instructions when the state releases them. Confirm current requirements before collecting or submitting application documents.
